‘The Falklands’ Exhibition
Commencing: 10.00AM – 6.00PM
Place: Imperial War Museum London
The Falklands 25th Anniversary Exhibition 16 May 2007 – 6 January 2008. To mark the 25th anniversary of the Falklands War, Imperial War Museum London is launching ‘The Falklands’, a new special exhibition that explores the people behind the most recent invasion of a British territory since the Second World War. Featuring material on public display for the first time, the exhibition tells the story of the war through the unique first-hand accounts and personal memorabilia of those involved. The exhibition explores the remarkable stories of British and Argentinian service personnel through personal items and memorabilia. Among the previously unseen items on display are the joystick of the helicopter flown by Lieutenant Richard Nunn and Sergeant Bill Belcher. As part of the two-man crew of a Scout helicopter supporting 2 Para in the battle to capture Goose Green, Nunn and Belcher were shot down on their way to pick up Lieutenant Colonel ‘H’ Jones, the mortally wounded Paras’ commanding officer who was later awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. The exhibition will also display the diary and medals of Royal Navy Surgeon Commander Rick Jolly who established and ran the British field hospital at Ajax Bay which became known as the ‘Red and Green Life Machine’. Wounded from both sides were treated by Jolly’s medical teams and he was honoured by Britain and Argentina for his humanitarian work – a unique distinction in modern conflict. From Argentina, and on public display in the United Kingdom for the first time, is the crucifix belonging to Capitan de Fragata (Commander) Nestor Cenci. Cenci was on board the cruiser General Belgrano when she was torpedoed and sunk by HM Submarine Conqueror on 2 May 1982 in the most controversial act of the war. The exhibition will also explore how the war affected the lives of civilians both at home and on the Falkland Islands. A piece of shrapnel that narrowly missed Falkland Islander Tim Miller will be displayed with an essay written by Lisa Pole-Evans who, aged nine, describes what it was like to be visited by four men of the Special Boat Service. A letter written by Lieutenant Colonel ‘H’ Jones to his wife Sara and the handwritten news despatch from Goose Green belonging to BBC Correspondent Robert Fox reveal how news of the war reached those at home. Artistic responses to the war will be illustrated by a selection of sketches made by Official War Artist Linda Kitson and original drawings by Raymond Briggs for his book The Tin-Pot Foreign General and the Old Iron Woman. Falklands veteran and military historian, Major General Julian Thompson CB OBE, who commanded 3 Commando Brigade in the initial landings and subsequent land fighting, has acted as a historical adviser to the exhibition. In association with the Imperial War Museum, Ebury Press will publish, Forgotten Voices of the Falklands, written by Falklands veteran Hugh McManners with an introduction by Sir Max Hastings to coincide with the exhibition. The Big Lottery Fund has supported the audio visual and online elements of this exhibition as part of Their Past Your Future. The exhibition will be accompanied by a website and an online interactive timeline www.iwm.org.uk/Falklands Launch date: May 2007

Falklands Lecture
Commencing: 11.00am – 1.00pm
Place: National Maritime Museum, Greenwich
Lecture by Commodore Michael Clapp and Lieutenant-Colonel Ewen Southby-Tailyour. The Falkland Campaign: Amphibious and Naval Inshore Support Operations by Commodore Michael Clapp: This lecture will cover the problems of mounting the amphibious operation for which there had been no contingency planning and the difficulties that resulted from a small staff that was not complemented for an operation of the scale and type envisaged. The rapid sailing, equipping and training of an ad-hoc task group of Royal Naval, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and Merchant Naval ships; the planning of the landings and their execution; the follow up operations with 5 Brigade and the inshore and logistic problems in support of the military as they moved towards Stanley and final victory. Michael Clapp is the son of a regular Army officer. He was educated at Marlborough College and joined the Royal Navy in 1950. He first saw action in 1952 off Korea as a midshipman. Later he was the boarding officer of the only Caique caught running guns into Cyprus. He was then selected to be an Observer in the Fleet Air Arm where he flew in a large variety of aircraft. He carried out pre-service flight trials on the Buccaneer and served in the first operational squadron as the senior observer developing operational techniques in the Far East. In 1964 he took command of HMS Puncheston during the Indonesian Confrontation and was mentioned in dispatches. In 1966 he commanded the first operational Buccaneer Mk2 Squadron and again took it out to the Far East for trials and development. On his return he lectured on naval air support at the Joint Warfare Establishment before returning to sea in command of HMS Jaguar which he sailed around the world. Then followed two tours in the MoD on the Naval Staff, another sea command, HMS Leander, a stint as Naval Director of the Joint Maritime Operational Training Staff and finally, in 1981, he was appointed Commodore Amphibious Warfare. Commodore Clapp commanded the Falkland’s Amphibious Task Group (CTG 317.0). Brigadier Thompson, his Landing Force Commander, and he jointly planned the landing of 3 Commando Brigade in San Carlos Water while Clapp was responsible for its execution. Clapp later landed the Divisional Headquarters and the Army 5 Brigade and was responsible for most inshore operations and much of the logistic support of the military. Beachcombing by Lieutenant- Colonel Ewen Southby-Tailyour: Beachcombing is the expression used for covert beach intelligence undertaken by people like me when ‘on holiday’ and which is then forwarded to DI4 – undertaken, seemingly by an innocent ‘tourist’ without obvious equipment for, say, measuring the stability of sand surface or underwater gradients. In 1978, Ewen Southby-Tailour was an officer commanding a small Royal Marines detachment in the Falkland Islands. On his own initiative he sailed around and extensively chartered the waters and compiled a notebook filled with data on harbours, inlets and landing spots. Even today it is still the most comprehensive sailing guide to the area. After the Argentine forces invaded, the British Forces asked for his book but he refused unless assigned as ‘staff officer without portfolio.’ He was made the navigation adviser to the command as well as commander of the Task Force Landing Craft Squadron. Major Ewen Southby-Tailour joined the Royal Marines in 1960, served in 42, 43 and 45 (twice) Cdos and numerous UK, US and French ships as a Landing Craft Officer. He was seconded to the Sultan of Muscat’s Armed Forces from 1966-68 as a Company Commander and was awarded the Sultan’s Bravery Medal for operations during the Dhofar War. He commanded naval party 8901 in the Falklands 1978-79 – (surveyed beaches for own use) then returned in 1982 as the Amphibious and Navigational Adviser and as CO of the specially formed Task Force Landing Craft Squadron. He invented, formed then commanded for 4 years 539 Assault Squadron Royal Marines before retiring in 1992 when he became an author of military biographies and built yachts for high-latitude exploring and surveying.

Task Force South: The Royal Navy and the Falklands War An exhibition at the Royal Naval Museum from 31st March 2007. The new exhibition at the Royal Naval Museum will focus on the Navy’s vital role in the War. Men and women from the Royal Navy, Fleet Air Arm, Royal Marines, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, Queen Alexandra Royal Navy Nursing Service and the Merchant Navy all played a key part, but often had very different experiences of the War. The exhibition will tell the history of the War through the words of some of the 18,000 people from the naval services who sailed in the Falklands Task Force of over 100 ships. Using artefacts, models, sound and film footage the exhibition will look at key events such as the sinking of the Argentinian cruiser General Belgrano, the Exocet strike on HMS Sheffield and the landings in San Carlos Bay. The War and its events were controversial at the time, the exhibition will examine the legacy of the Conflict and also offer visitors the chance to contribute their own opinions, thoughts and memories.

Currys to eject audio cassettes

Cassette tapes

Anyone of a certain age has a drawer full of old tapes

The digital world has finally caught up with the humble audio cassette as electrical retailer Currys announced it will stop stocking them.

Last year Currys sold just 100,000 tapes compared with 83 million in 1989.

The store will also phase out tape decks, which are currently available in less than 5% of audio equipment.

Currys said that the tape was no longer able to compete with MP3 players – some of which store the equivalent albums as 1,500 cassettes.

Mix tape nostalgia

The recordable tape was introduced in Europe in 1963 by Philips.

It will be missed by anyone who has spent a wet weekend making a “mix tape” for a loved one.

“I remember the tape with some fondness. The hours spent putting together compilation tapes and the all-too-familiar experience of finding that your deck had chewed your tape, will resonate with many now in their thirties and forties,” said Peter Keenan, managing director of Currys.

“For today’s MP3 generation, it’s just a few clicks of the mouse to achieve what’s arguably a better outcome,” he added.

The death-knell for pre-recorded tapes was sounded in the 1990s when record companies started phasing them out as CD sales overtook them.

The audio cassette has been a remarkably durable format and it will live on for a while longer. It is estimated that there are 500 million tapes still in circulation.
